Runners Split Road Trip, Fall to Inferno 11-4

by Andres Trujillo

Colorado Springs, CO (December 15, 2019) – This weekend was a 50/50 split in the result department for the New Mexico Runners (2-1). The Runners fell in Sunday afternoon’s match against the Colorado Inferno 11-4 as they closed out the two game weekend road trip.

Saturday night was a great start for New Mexico with a strong victory over the Colorado Rumble. Sunday was a different story as they struggled to find a rhythm against the Inferno (1-1).

In the first quarter, Colorado struck quickly in just over a minute into the game. The Inferno continued with high energy as they scored 3 more goals scored in the quarter. The Runners were able to pitch one in by Forward Jaime Rodriguez assisted by Midfielder Mario Matute to end the first quarter.

The second quarter was a battle on the defensive front from both sides including great saves by Goalkeeper Casey Gasson which resulted in no goals being scored.

Quarter number three started with a bang for New Mexico as Matute lasered one in from a short distance in just 40 seconds into the quarter. Another goal was followed up by Defender Seth Gordon three minutes later. 20 seconds later, Midfielder Walter Saucedo set up Jaime Rodriguez to tie things up at 4 apiece. Unfortunately that would be the last goal scored by New Mexico in the game. Colorado stepped on the gas and ended up scoring 5 more goals to round out quarter number 3 by leading 9-4.

Two more goals were added on by the Inferno early in the 4th and the pace of the game was slowed down as Colorado defeated New Mexico by a final score of 11-4.

A split result road trip moves the Runners to a record of 2-1 on the season.

The New Mexico Runners return home on Saturday December 21st to the Santa Ana Star Center where they will take on league newcomer Falls Town Flyers (1-1) at 5 PM MT.
